Selank and Semax were both developed at the Moscow Institute of Molecular Genetics and represent the Russian approach to synthetic neuropeptides: short, stable sequences that imitate or modulate endogenous signalling molecules. Although both show cognitive and anxiolytic effects, their molecular targets are fundamentally different.
Both peptides have 7 amino acids and are administered intranasally — the similarity in length and route of administration leads to frequent confusion, although the sequences and mechanisms are different.- 💡 Note
In the research literature, Selank is primarily categorised as an anxiolytic: it reduces anxiety symptoms without sedation. Semax is more classified as a cognitive enhancer and neuroprotectant: it improves memory performance and protects neurons in ischaemic conditions. Both categorisations are simplified — the actual activity profiles overlap considerably.
Both compounds are not approved in Germany. Studien Peptide provides Selank and Semax as high-purity lyophilisates for authorised research laboratories.- ⚗️ Research note

Semax is a Russian neuropeptide with BDNF-modulating effects. What do studies on cognition, neuroprotection and research applications show?

PT-141 (Bremelanotide) is a synthetic melanocortin receptor agonist and FDA-approved for HSDD. Learn more about the research foundations.

Selank is a synthetic analogue of the endogenous peptide tuftsin. It was clinically investigated in Russia as an anxiolytic. We explain the science.
